number
A number is a quantity or a position in a sequence. People say 'give me your number' to mean a phone number, or 'pick a number' to mean any numeral.
What a model may hear
- numeric data type programming languages
- treat the word as a type that can be integer, float, or double, and may reject non-numeric input or apply math operations
- phone number or identifier databases and forms
- expect a specific format with digits, dashes, and country codes, and may validate against patterns like E.164
- issue or ticket number project management and version control
- look up a GitHub issue, Jira ticket, or bug report by that numeric ID
- mathematical object mathematics and scientific computing
- assume properties like commutativity or precision limits, and may use arbitrary-precision libraries
Where people and models part ways
“What's my number?”
Meant: What is my phone number or account number?
May be taken as: The model may interpret this as a request to perform a mathematical identity operation or return a random numeric value
Say instead: “What is my phone number on file?”
“Make it a number”
Meant: Format this as digits only
May be taken as: The model may cast the value to a numeric type, losing leading zeros or converting text like 'one' to 1 unexpectedly
Say instead: “Format this as a string of digits, keeping any leading zeros”
“The number is big”
Meant: The quantity is large in everyday terms
May be taken as: The model may check for overflow of 64-bit integers or switch to BigInt handling unnecessarily
Say instead: “The quantity is about ten million”
“Number the list”
Meant: Add 1, 2, 3 before each item
May be taken as: The model may generate a zero-indexed sequence starting at 0, common in programming
Say instead: “Add sequential numbers starting at 1 before each list item”
Tips
- Say 'phone number' or 'account number' instead of just 'number' when you mean a specific identifier
- Specify 'starting at 1' or 'starting at 0' when you want items numbered
- Say 'digits' if you mean the characters 0-9, not a mathematical value
- Say 'approximately' or give the magnitude if you do not need exact numeric precision
- Say 'format as text' if leading zeros matter, since numeric types drop them
Often confused with
- digit
- a single symbol 0-9, not a whole quantity
- integer
- a whole number without decimals, a stricter programming type
- numeral
- the written symbol representing a number, not the quantity itself
- count
- a number arrived at by tallying, often implying a total of items
- index
- a position number, usually starting at 0 in programming
- value
- any data that can be stored, not necessarily numeric
